Today the kids have made official author status with their 'box set' of writing. Great job first graders! Thank you to Mrs. Elsing for brining chicks for the kids to experience first hand. The kids got to hold and learn about three different types of chicks: The Rhode Island Red, Easter Egger, and Isa Brown. Our class has been working on a geometry unit. This unit includes identifying shapes and their attributes, composing and decomposing shapes, and an introduction to fractions and symmetry. Below are some photos of our classroom activities. Animals With Symmetry Shape Exploration With Tangrams Today the first graders got a very unique opportunity. Mrs. Karl invited our class to participate in a Lego Robotic challenge. Working with a partner, the students had to put their critical thinking skills to work building a Lego car. It was great to see them working together, problem solving, and having fun. Click here to see a short video clip of the races. This afternoon the kids participated in a fossil learning experience. These activities gave them a small glimpse into the life of a paleontologist. Activities included making imprints, a dinosaur dig, unearthing the perfect chocolate chip, reading about fossils, reconstructing a dinosaur skeleton, and exploring fossils and their origin. Enjoy the photos! Forest Glen was lucky enough to be selected as the location for the district's Upward Campaign Kick-Off Event. Staff from the entire district, the Bay Port Orchestra, the board of the Upward Campaign, and many community members came to show their support for this initiative. It was very exciting for all involved. The students especially loved the "balloon launch" as the conclusion to the event. To learn more about this campaign, visit http://www.givetohssd.weebly.com/
